Elon Musk’s xAI has just released a dedicated mobile app for its AI chatbot, Grok. This move expands Grok’s accessibility beyond the X platform (formerly Twitter) and puts it directly into the hands of users via a free iOS app.
The “Grok Beta for iOS” app, as it’s listed in Apple’s App Store, provides access to xAI’s latest model, Grok 2. The app description highlights Grok as an “AI-powered assistant” designed to be “maximally truthful, useful, and curious.” Users can expect to get answers to questions, generate images, and even upload pictures to gain insights.
Here’s a breakdown of the app’s key features:
- Image Generation: Create striking visuals directly within the app.
- Real-Time Information: Grok leverages up-to-date information from the web and X, providing current and relevant responses.
- Engaging and Humorous Tone: The app aims for a conversational experience that is both informative and enjoyable.
- Privacy Focus: xAI emphasizes privacy in its app design.
Previously, Grok was only accessible through the X platform, as reported by The Wall Street Journal. This new app is currently free and doesn’t appear to have a subscription model, at least in its initial beta release in the U.S.
This launch follows a series of recent developments for Grok. In December, xAI made a free version of the chatbot available to all X users. They also announced significant improvements to the Grok-2 model in a December 12th blog post, stating it’s “three times faster and offers improved accuracy, instruction-following, and multilingual capabilities.” While all X users have access to this improved version, Premium and Premium+ subscribers enjoy higher usage limits and priority access to new features.
Adding to the momentum, xAI announced a successful $6 billion Series C funding round on December 23rd. These funds are earmarked for expanding advanced infrastructure, developing products for mass adoption, and accelerating research and development to further the company’s ambitious mission “to understand the true nature of the universe.”
The release of the stand-alone Grok app signals xAI’s commitment to wider accessibility and positions Grok as a more direct competitor in the growing AI chatbot market.
