Cryptocurrency markets surged following President Donald Trump’s unexpected announcement that his administration plans to establish a U.S. Crypto Strategic Reserve, marking a significant shift in government engagement with digital assets. The move, which Trump unveiled on social media Sunday, underscores his increasing efforts to leverage the volatile crypto market as a measure of his political support.
Trump Pushes for Government Crypto Holdings
Trump stated that the proposed reserve would include a mix of established and emerging cryptocurrencies, specifically naming XRP, Solana, and Cardano in his initial post. Hours later, he followed up by adding Bitcoin and Ethereum—the two largest digital currencies by market capitalization—to the list.
The announcement triggered an immediate spike in prices across the crypto market. Bitcoin surged past $90,000 on Monday morning, rebounding from its recent dip below $80,000. XRP, Solana, and Cardano experienced sharp increases before settling into a more gradual decline.
A New Era of Government Crypto Involvement?
During his campaign, Trump had floated the idea of a “strategic national Bitcoin reserve”, proposing that the government hold seized bitcoin assets from law enforcement actions. However, Sunday’s statement marks the first time he has explicitly supported accumulating a broader array of digital currencies.
The White House has yet to provide details on how much of each cryptocurrency the administration plans to acquire, how it would be obtained, or whether additional assets will be included in the reserve.
Market Reactions and Industry Divisions
Eric Trump, the president’s son, took to social media to tout the price spikes as validation of his previous encouragement for Americans to invest in crypto. “Hopefully, I made someone’s life just a little bit better,” he posted.
Trump has positioned himself as a champion of the crypto industry, which has long felt under siege from regulatory crackdowns during the Biden administration. His government has already moved to pause or end major enforcement actions by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC), which had taken a strict stance on unregistered crypto assets.
Criticism and Challenges Ahead
Despite the temporary market rally, Trump’s broader handling of cryptocurrency has come under scrutiny. Since his inauguration, crypto prices have slumped, and he has faced backlash for launching a personal meme coin just before taking office—an asset that has since collapsed in value. Similar issues have plagued Melania Trump and Argentine President Javier Milei, whose associated meme coins also plummeted.
In addition, a major hack of a top cryptocurrency exchange, attributed to North Korean cybercriminals, has dampened investor confidence. Influencer and crypto enthusiast Dave Portnoy recently questioned Trump’s effectiveness in boosting the sector, asking, “Why is crypto in the toilet if Trump is crypto king?”
The inclusion of alternative cryptocurrencies beyond Bitcoin is expected to spark debate within the crypto community. Bitcoin remains the dominant cryptocurrency, making up over half of the global crypto market cap. While some view a diversified government crypto reserve as a hedge against financial risks, critics argue that the extreme volatility of digital assets makes them unsuitable for reserve holdings.
Trump to Host Crypto Summit
Further underscoring his commitment to the sector, Trump also announced plans to host a Crypto Summit at the White House this Friday, where he will meet with industry leaders to discuss the future of digital assets and regulatory policies.
As Trump continues to shape his administration’s approach to cryptocurrency, investors and policymakers alike will be watching closely to see if his efforts lead to long-term market stability—or greater uncertainty.
